Gli Alluminogeni - Orizzonti Lontani

Questo è il primo 45 giri che la band torinese degli Alluminogeni diede alla luce. Un sound proto progressive tendente al sinfonico sia pure nel formato canzone da racchiudere all’interno di un singolo. Ispirati in questo caso dai Procol Harum gli Alluminogeni sfruttano l’effetto di presa sicura dei giri di Bach eseguti dall’organo Hammond del loro leader Patrizio Alluminio. Ascoltatelo QUI

This is the first 45 that the Turinese band Alluminogeni gave birth to. A proto progressive sound aiming to the symphonic even in the format of a song to be contained in a single. Il brano che propongo oggi è un selvaggio funk progressive con tutti gli ingredienti delle band italiane dell’epoca, parlo degli Osanna, dei Goblin, dei Delirium, cioè un mondo di chitarre distorte, flauti e batterie sincopate. Original pressing on Erre Records from 1974, the Ghosts of Nottingham are probably the same musicians of a melodic Roman band called Ut. The tune I have the pleasure to share is a wild progressive funk containing all the ingredients of Italian bands of the era, I mean Osanna, Goblin, Delirium, in a world made of distorted guitars, flutes and syncopated drums. Ennio Morricone - Il Pinguino

E’ in un Messico travagliato da lotte intestine che si svolge la trama dello spaghetti western Vamos A Matar, Compañeros e questo è uno dei temi principali. Il Pinguino è una pregevole composizione di Ennio Morricone, che ricalca gli standard usati dal maestro nella composizione di colonne sonore di western all’italiana, dal fischio di Alessandro Alessandroni a quelle arie malinconiche che Morricone, nonostante l’enorme produzione, riusciva a rendere sempre così uniche. It’s in a Mexico tormented by civil war that the storyline of Spaghetti Western Vamos A Matar, Compañeros take her place. Il Pinguino (The Penguin) is an excellent composition by Ennio Morricone, that follows into the standards usually used by Maestro during compositions of original soundtracks of Italian western movies, from Alessandroni’s whistles to those melancholy air that Morricone, despite an enormous production, was able to meke them unique. Peter Boom - Necklace of Pearls

Dalla colonna sonora dello spaghetti western all’italiana 1000 Dollari Sul Nero, composta dal valoroso trombettista pugliese Michele Lacerenza, il brano che vi propongo oggi, dopo una lunga pausa estiva, è uno strampalato pazzoide brano interpretato dall’attore olandese Peter Boom, scomparso di recente. Un piccolo meccanico walzer di organetto, forse con incatenata un’elegantissima scimmietta, una profondissima voce da Crooner e un travolgente assolo di tromba del Maestro Lacerenza ci immergono in maniera vivida nelle immagini degli spaghetti western che svolazzano nella nostra memoria collettiva: polvere, bottiglie di whisky stappate con i denti, risate grasse, sudore, cavalli imbizzarriti, corde con cappi, doppi giochi. Original soundtrack from the Spaghetti Western movie called 1000 Dollari Sul Nero (1000 $ On The Black), composed by the valorous trumpeter Michele Lacerenza; the piece I want to propose today, after a long summer break, is an odd and kooky track performed by Dutch actor Peter Boom, recentely passed away. A small clockwork hurdy-gurdy waltz, maybe with a well dresseed little monkey in chain, the deepest Crooner voice and an overwhelming trumpet solo of Maestro Lacerenza dip us in a vivid way into the images of Spaghetti Western that flutter about our collective memory: dust, whisky bottles uncapped by teeth, fat laugh, sweat, horses taking fright, rope with loop, double games. Giuseppe Marsella - Piper Shake

“Non so se ti ricordi quando noi ballavamo al Piper Club....per insegnarmi ancora l’indiavolata danza di nome Shake”. Queste frasi estrapolate all’inizio del brano che vi propongo oggi possono rendere l’idea di cosa stiamo parlando: puro beat italiano. Giuseppe Marsella è un nome assolutamente oscuro, mi viene da pensare a una produzione privata di qualche cantante che voleva accreditarsi presso il mitico Piper Club per tentare di avere una qualche visibilità. Sinceramente spero che si faccia vivo qualche super esperto per chiarire la natura di questo fenomeno.
Ciò premesso, il brano secondo me è assolutamente valido e ci ricorda vagamente, molto vagamente, il Tainted Love di Gloria Jones... Ora potete anche lapidarmi... Ascoltatelo QUI anche se purtroppo il tempo l'ha consumato un po' troppo.

“I don’t know if you remember when we was dancing at Piper Club..to learn me again that infernal dance called Shake”. These sentencies excerped from the beginninig of the track I’m going to propose to you can well represent the idea of what we are talking about: pure Italian Beat. Giuseppe Marsella is a total obscure name and I think to some private production of some singer who just wanted to be credited close to the mythical Piper Club to try to gain some visibility. Frankly I really hope that some super expert will come out from the cellar to explain the nature of this freak.
That being stated, this piece is absolutely valuable and remind us, very very vaguely, to Gloria Jones’ Tainted Love... Now you can lapidate me... Listen HERE even if the passed time wear it out maybe too much.

Filippo Trecca - Col Fiato in Gola

Una delle non numerose produzioni di Filippo Trecca, direttore d’orchestra romano e arrangiatore. Il brano è un downtempo di quelli onirici, tipici di impostazioni musicali che negli anni 70 erano standard, una composizione psych funk con un grandissimo lavoro di batteria. Listen HERE

One of the not so large Filippo Trecca’s productions, roman orchestra conductor and arranger. This track is a sleazy oneiric downtempo, typical of musical set-up that in the ‘70s was a common standard, a psych funk composition with a very good job on drums. Listen HERE

Importante band italiana annoverata tra i rari esempi di psichedelia ispirata alla West Coast. La cantante Silvana Aliotta ricorda molto la Grace Slick dei Jefferson Airplane, fino al punto che si dice che la prima versione di Fuzz, Acid and Flowers di Vernon Joynson li volesse americani, anziché torinesi. Important Italian band, numbered among rare examples of psychedelia West Coast inspired. The lead singer Silvana Aliotta can be easily moved beside Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick, untill that there’s a rumor that says that the first edition of Fuzz, Acid and Flowers by Vernon Joynson wanted them American, instead of Turinese. Tomstones - Paura

Discreto esempio di tardo progressive, con punte quasi kraut, questa B side si contrappone alle velleità da disco per l’estate e da festival bar del lato A, risultando un lavoro degno di nota. Curiosamente il brano è accreditato ai Tombstones, con una B in più.

Decent example of late progressive, almost kraut oriented, This B side is in contrast to ambitions of summer records and ordinary music contests of A side, making a job noteworthy. Curiously the title is credited to The Tombstones, with an extra B.

La Quinta Faccia - Strano Uomo

Bentrovato, Freakbeat. Un mediocre complesso melodico che impazzisce e sforna un pezzo clamoroso. La Quinta Faccia, come detto, propende per il genere melenso sentimentale, ma non appena osa ribellarsi riesce a tirare fuori quella forza che negli altri 45 giri della band rimane completamente sopita. Welcome back, Freakbeat. A common melodic band that turn to crazy and grind us out a resounding piece. La Quinta Faccia (The Fifth Face), as said before, it’s inclined to the sentimental melodic genre, but as they dare rebel they are able to take out that strenght that in the others 45 remains completely soothed. Piero Piccioni - Balletto Arturo

Nel 1972 Piero Piccioni realizzava questo Balletto Arturo, un’introvabile composizione di 40 secondi che fungeva da sigla nella compianta vecchia TV dei Ragazzi. Un documento raro, che credo sia uscito solo in produzioni RAI. Questo non è propriamente un 45 giri perchè, pur essendo un sette pollici, gira a 33. In the 1972 Piero Piccioni realised this Balletto Arturo, a very difficult to find composition made of 40 seconds that was the signature tune of our beloved past Kids TV. A rare document, that I believe was out only in RAI (Italian Broadcasting TV) productions. This is not a regular 45, because, even if it’s a seven inches, it spins at 33. There is other interesting stuff in there, that maybe I will publish someday. Listen HERE

Thane Russall è uno degli eroi del Piper Club di Roma, dove i suoi concerti scatenavano il pubblico, voglioso di trasgressione. Questo brano è una cover di Show Me dell’ottimo Joe Tex.
